Under normal fasting conditions, the healthy heart derives its energy from a variety of oxidizable substrates, including fatty acids, glucose, lactate, and amino acids. Among them, 60-70% of the energy production is obtained from fatty acid oxidation, and most of the remaining energy comes from glucose metabolism in the healthy myocardium. Under ischemic conditions, oxidative metabolism of free fatty acids is decreased due to the requirement of more oxygen compared to glucose for β-oxidation in mitochondria. …
