Association of fetuin-A to adiponectin ratio with metabolic syndrome: a cross-sectional study

Fetuin-A is a protein which is an endogenous inhibitor inhibiting insulin receptor tyrosine kinase causing insulin resistance [1]. Increased fetuin-A expression has also been shown to be involved in excessive fat accumulation, impaired glucose tolerance and inflammatory processes [2, 3]. In the past years, a large body of research has demonstrated a strong positive correlation between increased fetuin-A levels and metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components [4, 5]. In contrast to fetuin-A, adiponectin is a protein with protective features against MS which is recognized as a critical regulator of insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and glucose and lipid metabolism [6, 7]. A recent study revealed reduced circulating adiponectin levels are associated with the MS independently of obesity, lipid indices and serum insulin levels [8]. …
