Rapidly progressive dementia with severe insomnia: an unusual case of progressive supranuclear palsy mimicking dementia with Lewy bodies

Differential diagnoses of rapidly progressive dementia may include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), Hashimoto’s encephalopathy, various encephalitis, and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). However, it is very difficult to suspect progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in people presenting with rapidly progressive dementia if vertical gaze abnormalities and/or axial rigidity are not prominent [1, 2]. In this report, we describe an unusual patient diagnosed with PSP, displaying rapidly progressive dementia and severe insomnia mimicking cognitive fluctuation, who was initially assumed to have CJD and later diagnosed with DLB. …
