The IUPS 2009 Satellite Symposium “The Kidney and Hypertension” took place on 23–24 July 2009 in Tokyo, Japan. This satellite symposium dealt with several major aspects of electrolyte metabolism and its control system. It focused on the molecular structure, function, and regulation of epithelial sodium transporters and sodium (ENaC) and potassium (Kir) channels. The special role of ‘claudins’ in the tight junction (TJ) of the kidney tubule cells discussed by S. Muto (Jichi Medical University). The underlying mechanisms of the relationship between cardiovascular events and chronic kidney disease (CKD) by S. Ito (Tohoku University). Moreover, the contribution of the renal tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF) system to the renin−angiotensin−aldosterone system (RAAS) and its modulation by vasopressin V1a receptor (V1aR) were considered. Thus, the meeting’s first session comprised two plenary lectures delivered by S. Ito and J. Schnermann (NIH), who clearly summarized the cardiovascular risks of CKD and the convergence of major physiological stimuli for renin release in the TGF system. The above topics were discussed in entirety the following three sessions of the symposium. …
