To the Editor—The study on 2 percent formalin retention enemas was performed in a small cancer center in rural India. Formalin is probably one of the most active chemical agents in hemorrhagic radiation proctitis. Hence, an attempt with a 2 percent concentration was the most logical thing to do because endoscopes and trained physicians are a rarity there. It also was an attempt to encourage the greater use of formalin for radiation proctitis, a practice from which many oncologists and primary care physicians shy away despite encountering this problem often. …
