The rate of anastomotic leak after right hemicolectomy in recent large prospective cohort studies is significantly higher than previously reported. The European Society of Coloproctology right hemicolectomy audit [
1] prospectively identified the ileocolic anastomotic leak rate to be 8.1% (of 3041 patients). The Spanish ANACO group identified an overall leak rate of 8.4% in 1102 patients undergoing elective right hemicolectomy for cancer [
2]. A nationwide audit from the Netherlands found anastomotic leak rates to be 6.4% and 7.5%, in patients having anastomosis after right hemicolectomy (
n = 7788) and ileo-cecal resection (
