Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen of Naples and Sicily: a possible case of Graves’ orbitopathy

Maria Carolina of Austria (1752–1814) was the Queen of Naples and Sicily as the wife of King Ferdinand IV and III. The Queen became de facto ruler of the Kingdom after the birth of the male heir and her admission to the Privy Council. She promoted a policy of enlighted absolutism based on her adherence to Masonic ideas derived from the Age of Enlightenment, at least up to the execution of her sister Marie Antoinette and the forced flee subsequent to the policy of Napoleon Empire. In 1813, after the abdication of her husband, the Queen was deprived of any political influence and forced to leave Sicily and return to Vienna, where she died in September 8, 1814, at the age of 62, for the consequences of a stroke. …
