ASO Author Reflections: 10-Year Survival After Surgical Microwave Ablation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Microwave ablation has attracted recent attention as a local ablation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We have performed surgical microwave ablation, termed microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy (MCN), for HCC for more than 20 years, and have previously reported its feasibility and safety for HCC patients.1 Our latest study revealed no significant differences in long-term outcomes between hepatic resection and MCN for HCC patients with single tumors ≤ 5 cm, in a propensity score-matched analysis.2 However, to our knowledge, little evidence is available regarding actual 10-year survival rates after microwave ablation. The aim of this study was to determine the actual number of patients surviving ≥ 10 years after microwave ablation and to identify the prognostic factors associated with 10-year survival. …
