Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare neoplasms that represent only 0.1–3 % of all gastrointestinal malignancies. However, they are the most common mesenchymal gastrointestinal neoplasm, accounting for 80 % of all cases [1]. Its incidence has increased considerably in the past years due to growing investigation and knowledge on the features of this disease; in fact, many of the previously reported mesenchymal gastrointestinal tumors are now thought to have been misdiagnosed. …
