Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, acting by either accelerating atherosclerosis progression or inducing a prothrombotic/antifibrinolytic systemic milieu [13]. Several studies support the relevant role of Lp(a) in the occurrence of coronary events, especially in patients with premature coronary artery disease (CAD) [46]. However, the association of elevated Lp(a) levels with the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with a prior coronary event optimally treated with statins remains controversial [7].
