High stability of a new Granada medium agar that allows rapid and accurate detection of colonization with group B streptococci in pregnant women

Infections with group B streptococci (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) are a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. CDC have recommended a selective enrichment broth medium with subcultures on sheep blood agar for screening for GBS colonization of pregnant women at 35–37 weeks’ gestation [1]. Granada media (GM) have been suggested for the detection of GBS because S. agalactiae produces a characteristic orange–red pigment. However, the reduced stability of GM has been a major obstacle to their wider laboratory use [2]. We prospectively evaluated a new, commercially available Granada agar that has recently been tested following a distinct methodology [3] for its stability and sensitivity for the detection of GBS. …
