In 1964, Marc van Regenmortel lectured us Virology as final-year science students studying Microbiology at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. I was immediately fascinated by not only the subject matter but also his lucid and logical lecturing style. I was particularly intrigued by biophysics - those were the early days of analytical ultracentrifugation, diffusion and electrophoresis, and he succeeded in making those aspects come alive (no doubt due in part to his having studied under Alfred Polson at the University of Cape Town). It was then that I was bitten by the virology “bug”! …
