Aeromonas diarrhea and Behçet’s disease: more than a mere association

Aeromonas bacteria are gram-negative bacilli, a facultative anaerobic population found in water and in various fresh products (meat, milk and ice cream) [1]. They cause 1.8% of the registered traveller acute gastroenteritis in developed countries, and 4% in developing countries (more common in the pediatric population) [2]. Aeromonas are considered opportunistic pathogens, although recently they have been related to non-inflammatory diarrhea in patients with unknown underlying pathology. In subjects with associated comorbidity, diarrhea has inflammatory features. These patients can be immunosuppressed (either by the underlying disease or by the treatment itself), patients with known malignancy, long-standing diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease or chronic liver or biliary disease [1, 3]. …
