Diet plays an important role in the course of osteoarthritis. Obesity due to the imbalance between physical exercise and caloric intake impairs body biomechanics and also influences disease progression by increasing load on weight-bearing joints, knees in particular. The altered load distribution deteriorates cartilage homeostasis, leading to joint degeneration. Currently, inflammation is also considered in the context of both osteoarthritis and obesity. Particularly, abnormal biomechanics and overproduction of inflammatory markers, leptin and other adipokines (cytokines secreted by adipose tissue), intensify inflammatory activity in osteoarthritis.
WHO estimates that half of all patients worldwide are non-adherent to their prescribed medication. The consequences of poor adherence can be catastrophic, on both the individual and population level.
