Supporting Lactation: US Internal Medicine Residency Programs Still Lack Program-Specific Lactation Policies

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education implemented core requirements to improve lactation support in 20191; however, it remains unclear how these requirements are met by training programs. Prior studies described program-specific lactation policies across specialties2,3, but nationwide data is lacking. One survey of pediatric programs found the majority offered lactation facilities; however, only 10% had a lactation policy2. Analogous data for Internal Medicine (IM) residency programs does not exist. Understanding current practices and policies in IM programs will inform interventions to support lactating residents. …
