Recent evidence indicates that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) biology is an important determinant of prognosis, although we are only beginning to understand and incorporate tumor biology into clinical care. One aspect of HCC biology is microvascular invasion (MVI), which describes the histologic presence of malignant cells within adjacent microvessels and is thought to capture the process by which cancers metastasize to local and distant sites. In our literature review, we set out to understand the prognostic and therapeutic implications of MVI in HCC outcomes.
