Persistent dystonia and basal ganglia involvement following metronidazole induced encephalopathy

Metronidazole is an antimicrobial agent, widely used in treatment of infectious diseases [1, 2]. Since 1978, numerous patients have been reported with neurological complications of metronidazole such as peripheral neuropathy, motor lateralized impairment, cerebellar dysfunction (ataxia, dysarthria and dysmetria), oculomotor disturbances, visual impairment (nystagmus), vestibulocochlear toxicity, dysarthria, seizure, and encephalopathy [1]. It rarely induces movement disorder [24]. In most reported patients, these complications have been reversible without neurologic sequels [15]. Herein, we report a young patient with persistent generalized dystonia and basal ganglia involvement following metronidazole toxicity. …
