Placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PASDs) result from abnormal implantation of the placenta on the uterus, with a consequent lack of normal placental separation at delivery. It is a considerable cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, with delivery often complicated by massive haemorrhaging requiring peripartum hysterectomy. There has been nearly a 10-fold increase in incidence of PASD over the past 50 years, primarily driven by increased caesarean section (C-section) delivery rates, with almost 1 in 313 of deliveries affected by the end of 2017. The primary risk factors for PASD include placenta previa, history of prior PASD, and uterine surgery or instrumentation, most notably C-section delivery [1]. …
