Over the past two decades, transplantation has evolved from an experimental technique to a routine treatment for end-stage hepatic disease. It is increasingly successful: the 1-year mortality rate for liver transplants is now 84% and the 3-year mortality is 76%. There is no upper age limit. Children younger than 12 months can receive transplants because of improved surgical techniques such as volume reduction hepatectomy (in which an adult liver is reduced in size to fit a child), split-liver hepatectomy, and living donor transplantation. …
