I was the third female physician to become a partner in our practice; at the time, there were six male partners. Occasionally, the men would take a day off to go skiing together, leaving the office staffed by the female physicians and nurse practitioners. These trips were infrequent, and they did once invite woman #2, who could outski them with her eyes closed. I did not feel especially excluded from the winter adventure, but I vividly recall, as I listened to them recount conversations over lunch or on the ski lift, realizing I had missed getting to know my colleagues outside of work. …
