Excerpt

Frail and malnourished patients are at increased risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality.1,2 This is especially critical for surgical oncology patients, who are at risk of delays in initiation of systemic therapy if faced with postoperative complications. Despite the increasing focus on frailty, formal frailty assessments are infrequently incorporated into preoperative evaluations. The risk assessment index (RAI) is a validated, granular, yet easily administrable frailty assessment tool that has identified patients at risk of postoperative mortality after elective general surgery, but to date has not been prospectively evaluated in a surgical oncology patient population.3
