Bikini Line Sleeve Gastrectomy: the First Experience in Europe

Bariatric surgery has been recognized as the most effective treatment modality for morbid obesity. The failure of medical therapy and the success of surgery have produced an exceptional series of new techniques for the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities. Among various bariatric procedures, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) became one of the most frequently performed surgeries for treatment of morbid obesity [
1,
2]. The first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was reported in 1999 as a part of duodenal switch procedure and the first report of LSG as a standalone operation was in 2000 [
3]. The standalone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy has increased in popularity in the past several years and now is the most common bariatric surgery performed in the world and the USA [
2,
4,
5]. Based on the 2018 IFSO Global Registry report, 99.3% of bariatric surgeries were performed laparoscopically; the most common procedure globally was sleeve gastrectomy 46% [
5]. Minimally invasive surgery has undergone significant advances; despite this, it is still developing new techniques. The procedures become less invasive as the size of ports is reduced, while maintaining the extent of surgery and maintaining patients’ satisfaction with cosmetic results. It is advisable to take cosmetic results into consideration in the field of bariatric surgery as much as possible, as most patients are not happy with their scar’s appearance, most of them adopt different coping behaviours to hide or compensate them [

8]. The ports during the bikini line sleeve gastrectomy (BLSG) are placed at the lower abdomen in order to make the port scars aesthetically acceptable. It is reported that the patients feel less pain after the bikini line sleeve gastrectomy [
9], although this requires more data to make final conclusions. The purpose of this report is to describe our initial experience of the BLSG operation. To our knowledge, this is the first report in Europe of BLSG technique being applied. …
