Comments on the Usage of External Breast Prosthesis by Indian Women Undergoing Mastectomy

In India, 1 in 29 women is at risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime with the highest burden in metropolitan cities [1]. In the era where breast conservation surgery and breast reconstruction are being increasingly performed, a lot of breast cancer patients are still treated by mastectomy. The decision of mastectomy is dependent on the stage of breast cancer or availability of a radiotherapy unit. In countries like India where the per capita income is low, breast reconstruction and radiotherapy add to the financial burden of the patient and their families. Many women believe that mastectomy is safer than breast conservation or reconstruction. Mastectomy has a negative impact on body image and causes psychological distress. Women feel loss of femininity leading to anxiety and depression. …
