We read the new Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines (SSCG) 2021 [1] with great interest. We herein express our concern regarding one of its recommendations. The authors indicated that “For adult patients with sepsis or septic shock who can be fed enterally, we suggest early (within 72 h) initiation of enteral nutrition”. To date, SSCG 2016 [2] and other international guidelines have defined the initiation of enteral nutrition (EN) within 48 h as early and have recommended the early initiation of EN. The same recommendation was suggested in the Japanese Sepsis Guidelines (J-SSCG) 2020 [3]. …
