Sentinel node biopsy in laparoscopic surgical oncology

The technique of sentinel lymph node mapping has been evolved, refined and standardized over the last few years, changing surgical oncology practice for some cancer types. The sentinel node biopsy (SNB) has been the state-of-the-art approach in the treatment of early breast cancer and melanoma. With current sensitivity and specificity over 90-95%, the benefits for the patients regarding prevention of an unnecessary lymphadenectomy and its associated morbidity are substantial. Despite these advances, several questions have not yet been clarified. For example, in women with early breast cancer, when micrometastatic disease or isolated cancer cells are detected in SNB, should an axilla lymphadenectomy be performed and adjuvant chemotherapy be administered? Large-scale clinical trials are underway in the US that may answer such questions [1]. …
