Recurrent high fever with macular papules in an elderly male: a case report

The patient, a 73-year-old male, was admitted to the Department of Emergency Medicine of Subei People’s Hospital on May 28, 2016, due to intermittent chills and fever for more than 1 month. The patient had a previous history of chronic emphysema, pulmonary vesicles, right lower lobe pulmonary nodules, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and schistosomiasis liver disease, as well as rectal cancer, which was treated with surgery and postoperative chemotherapy for 3 years prior. One month prior, the patient had intermittent fever without obvious inducement, accompanied by chills. The highest body temperature was 40 °C, and the high fever was accompanied by generalized fatigue. He was discharged from the hospital after 8 days of anti-infective and antipyretic treatment. On May 28, the patient again had a fever of 38.6 °C, accompanied by cough and expectoration, but no night sweats, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or other specific discomforts. Physical examination results were as follows: body temperature: 38.6 °C, stable vital signs, and the presence of liver-area percussion pain, with no other obvious abnormalities. …
