Development of Oncology in Uttar Pradesh: the Last 50 Years

Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) is India’s most populous state with a population of more than 240 million densely packed (829 per sq km) in its 75 districts. The state was much larger before 2000 when the new state of Uttaranchal (later renamed Uttarakhand) was carved out of Uttar Pradesh from its Northern region. Despite its huge size and population and its political pre-eminence, U.P. has always lagged behind in development. The Human Development Index (HDI), a composite of health, education, and per capita income, of U.P. in 2019 was 0.596. This was much below the national average HDI of 0.645 and second from the bottom of the list. In the background of this, the development of cancer care facilities in U.P. has been very slow. …
