The article by Majors et al. [
1] provides a significant information for orthopedic surgery, especially in the placement of a prosthetic joint due to its main complication, which is an infection. Biomarkers are an effective tool to determine a possible prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The main ones are C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrosedimentation grade (ESR), white blood cells in synovial fluid (WBC) and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) in synovial fluid. In addition, the author focused on evaluating interleukin 6 (IL-6) as a diagnostic tool for PJI in the knee. Although more evidence is needed to establish the most effective predictors of PJI, other recent studies show different biomarkers that may or may not help with this diagnosis. …
