Park et al. from Melbourne, Australia, report their failure to identify by standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-like
env sequences in DNA extracted from 42 formalin-fixed invasive breast cancer specimens, all from women living in Melbourne [
1]. This negative outcome is in stark contrast to the many reports of the positive identification of MMTV-like
env sequences in breast cancers from independent laboratories in Australia, Argentina, China, Italy, Mexico, Tunisia, and the United States [
2]. However, in past years other workers have also failed to identify these sequences in breast cancers [
