As the surgical management of pancreatic diseases has evolved over the past 20 years, there has been a notable trend toward the use of minimally invasive approaches. Open surgery, percutaneous catheters, endoscopic procedures, and videoscopic surgery are now included in the general surgeon’s armamentarium, but the question remains of which option to choose and when to use it. The combined development of minimally invasive approaches, a better understanding of the disease processes, and higher standards of care in the intensive care unit (ICU) have led to marked improvements in morbidity and mortality. This review will discuss the evolution of procedures for the treatment of complications of acute pancreatitis as well as providing an overview of the current status of the laparoscopic approach to pancreatic resection for benign disease and a critical appraisal of the relevant literature. …
