Subjects with migraine with aura (MA) have been consistently reported to present an increased risk for stroke that can be explained by a number of pathogenetic mechanisms including paradoxical embolism via patent foramen ovale (PFO), increased prevalence of thrombophilia, endothelial dysfunction, and a theorized cerebral hemodynamic impairment.
