In the early 1970’s I found myself working at a pharmaceutical manufacturer in Cape Town. Soon, however, the charm of assaying injections and testing suppositories faded. Hopeful that a just-completed Molecular Biology building at the university would need to be populated, I went to see the head of Microbiology, Professor M. H. van Regenmortel. Almost the first thing I heard was that if I had any intention of pursuing a research career, I would have to become accustomed to eating sardines, not steak! This was the beginning of a career-long, on-off-on acquaintance with Marc, his science and his unique brand of immunophilosophy. …
