The patient was a 71-year-old man undergoing aortic valve replacement and septal myectomy for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and septal hypertrophy with dynamic left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Past medical history included a successful liver transplantation in 2001. Pre-operative CT thorax performed the day before surgery demonstrated paraesophageal varices. Prior to this scan, there was no mention or diagnosis of varices in the patient record. …
