Liver resection is a potential curative strategy for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, because HCC patients usually have a cirrhotic background, the incidence of postoperative complications (POCs) is high.1 The negative impact of POCs on oncologic outcomes has been reported for various types of cancers, including colorectal liver metastasis2 and gastric cancer.3 However, controversy exists about the relationship between POCs and the long-term survival for HCC patients after hepatectomy. Worse still, the limited numbers of patients and the inconsistency in patient selection and definition of POCs in previous studies have led to insufficient reliability for proof of a link between POCs and oncologic outcomes. …
