Excerpt

Head and neck oncologic surgery may often require complex reconstructive procedures with pedicled or free flaps to restore the fundamental functions related to the upper aerodigestive tract.1, 2 Although much progress has been made in this field over time, this surgery is still burdened by a significant morbidity, also as a consequence of early or late postoperative flap failure, especially in frail or comorbid patients.1, 2 For this reason, the possibility of performing safer and more reliable reconstructions may play an essential role in increasing the chances of patients to rapidly and fully recover from such heavy procedures.3, 4
