Excerpt

Although the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system has been endorsed by both the European Association for the Study of the Liver 1 and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases,2 investigators have advocated for extending the resection criteria to select patients with BCLC-B or even BCLC-C hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).3,4 Nevertheless, outcomes and patterns of recurrence after resection of HCC within and beyond the BCLC criteria have not been well defined. By utilizing an international, multi-institutional cohort, we sought to determine the outcomes as well as the patterns of recurrence after resection of HCC within (i.e., BCLC-0/A) and beyond (i.e., BCLC-B/C) the BCLC criteria.5
