Reports such as “Crossing the quality chasm” have emphasized the importance of quality of care in healthcare.
1 Hospital performance remains an important topic not only from the patient perspective but also for other stakeholders in the healthcare field. Previous literature has largely focused on individual “siloed” outcomes including mortality, readmissions, or morbidity to evaluate hospital performance.
2 Examining surgical outcomes individually may not represent the quality of care from the patient perspective, as patients experience care generally as an “all or none” phenomenon. To date, several investigators have embraced the use of composite quality metrics such as “textbook outcome” (TO) to define quality from a more holistic, patient-centered perspective.
