ASO Author Reflections: Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Beyond the BCLC Guidelines—How Can Machine Learning Techniques Help?

Recent advances in surgical techniques, radiologic assessment, and perioperative management have increased the resectability rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide.1 Although the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) guidelines recommend resection only for patients with BCLC-0 or BCLC-A HCC,2 a growing number of studies have shown a benefit of resection among select patients with BCLC-B HCC.1,3 Due to the ongoing debate around the resection criteria for HCC, machine learning techniques4 could help physicians identify the factors that hold the most prognostic weight in the pre- and postoperative setting for each BCLC stage and, thus, identify which patients will benefit the most from resection beyond the current BCLC criteria. …
