ASO Author Reflections: Heterogeneity of Duodenal Neuroendocrine Tumors

To date, little has been known about the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (dNENs), and this kind of neuroendocrine tumor is still largely unexplored. These tumors were previously classified as foregut neuroendocrine tumors, and because of their rarity, studies have often combined dNENs with other small bowel NENs, even if their general prognosis has been reported to be more favorable. Moreover, despite clear differences, in the current guidelines, dNEN management is treated along with either gastric or, if functioning, pancreatic NENs.13 Optimal management of dNENs is unclear, and endoscopic resection is increasingly performed instead of surgery. …
