Giuliano published the initial study describing sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for breast cancer in 1994,1 starting a new era of axillary staging for invasive breast cancer. Surgeons adopted SLNB because it accurately stages the axilla without the morbidity of axillary node dissection (ALND). The American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG) Z-102 and National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) B-323 studies established the validity of the procedure. …
