The Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG) was created in 2013 to collaboratively advance knowledge and treatment of retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS).
1 At present, complete macroscopic resection remains the only potentially curative treatment, and this is dependent upon tumor biology, anatomic-technical factors, and patient frailty. In contrast to pancreatic adenocarcinoma, where agreed criteria exist to define borderline resectable versus unresectable,
2 a similar algorithm has proven difficult in RPS because tumors are heterogeneous, with numerous histologies and unique tumor biologies, and variable multi-visceral and neuro-vascular involvement.
3,4 We therefore convened sarcoma specialists (surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists) from around the world in a monthly virtual tumor board (VTB) to discuss challenging cases that were initially reviewed at a sarcoma center and deemed challenging to resect for cure.
