ASO Author Reflections: Is Wedge Resection Optimal for Octogenarians with Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Compared with Lobectomy/Segmentectomy?

Anatomical resection including segmentectomy and lobectomy would be considered a standard treatment for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) if the results of the ongoing, prospective, randomized Japanese Clinical Oncology Group 0802/West Japan Oncology Group 4607L (JCOG0802/WJOG4607L)1 and Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) 1405032 trials were positive. This treatment strategy is the same for patients aged ≥ 80 and < 80 years. However, patients are assumed to be at higher risk for anatomical resection if aged ≥ 80 years. Thus, whether anatomical or wedge resection would be more appropriate for populations aged ≥ 80 years has remained undetermined. …
