There is concern that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy lead to cumulative toxicity. Tenofovir (TDF) is the first choice for most subjects. Even if it has a safe metabolic profile, much attention has been fixed on kidney tubular function and regulation of phosphate metabolism.
