Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains a major global health problem. It is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Drug resistance threatens global TB control with the emergence of multidrug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) TB. The burden of MDR TB and XDR TB in India is not available as continuous surveillance for drug resistance is not carried out.
