Secondary bacterial pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus complicating 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viral infection

In April 2009, a novel influenza virus (2009 influenza A [H1N1] virus) was first reported in humans [1]. This was followed by case series of patients with severe 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viral infection [25]. Although secondary bacterial pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus was a major cause of death in patients with influenza during prior pandemics [6], it has not been well characterized during the current pandemic [25]. We therefore describe two patients with early onset secondary bacterial pneumonia due to S. aureus that occurred as a complication of 2009 H1N1 viral infection. …
