The thyroid follicle forms the structural and functional unit of the thyroid gland. Each follicle consists of a lining of the follicular epithelium which surrounds a thyroglobulin pool. The follicle is central to the homeostatic functioning of the thyroid, whereby signals from the hypothalamo-pituitary axis are relayed to the effector tissues through these cells.
