The central assertion suggested in the accompanying article [1], is that co-sleeping associated deaths are different, in terms of their epidemiology and mechanisms, from other sudden unexpected deaths in infancy (SUDI). This is supported by various data, as stated by the author, including differences in findings at autopsy suggesting that a proportion of these cases may indeed be associated with asphyxia. In one recent study of >500 SUDI, 60 % of unexplained SUDI were co-sleeping associated, these showing increased frequency of fresh intra-alveolar hemorrhage [2]. …
