Some thyroid tumors are notoriously difficult to classify, which presents an important obstacle to correct patient management. Therefore, a symposium on controversial issues in thyroid pathology, with a focus on thyroid tumors, was organized in the context of the 21st meeting of the European Society for Pathology, in September 2007, in Istanbul.
