The transfer note was a tragedy in bullet points. He was a teenager, he had two sisters, he’d been a swimmer, he lived near my childhood home; he had suffered a massive pontine stroke while surgeons repaired an unexplainable aneurysm in his brain. For the last two years, he had been completely conscious but completely paralyzed, able to communicate only by blinking.
