Crohn’s disease is a chronic, unremitting inflammatory disorder that potentially affects the entire gastrointestinal tract and its recurrent nature has been long recognized. Investigators have accordingly strived to help patients avoid recurrence through efforts to elucidate the disease’s pathogenesis, measure the magnitude of the problem, understand associated risk factors, detect inflammation before it clinically manifests itself, and trial preventive medical therapies. Despite these initiatives, patients undergoing operative management of their disease remain at risk for disease recurrence. …
